Both of you should leave your (trusted?) neighbours with a set of keys to your houses. No need to change locks - no more locking yourselves out - neighbours will also keep an eye open and can enter if required when you're not around.

Ani, we added a new twist to the humiliation of it all - I managed to lock us out whilst actually having the key in my hand! Because we had accidentally left another key still in the lock inside the house, we couldn't turn the lock from outside with our other key. We tried and tried to jiggle the key so that it would push the inside key out onto the floor, but without success. So you could say that we had too many keys, I guess.
